63rd annual Englewood Pioneer Days ...

Englewood Pioneer Days is an annual celebration, held in late summer and concludes on Labor Day, which includes a parade & festival, two car shows, music, vendors, a history tour, diaper derby, cardboard boat races and more! Here’s the schedule of events:

Reading on the beach ...

The Hermitage Artist Retreat presents a “Sunset reading on the beach,” with poet Melissa Studdard and author Michael J. Seidlinger, on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. on the beach at the Hermitage. Studdard will read poems from her poetry collection, “I ate the cosmos for breakfast,” as well as from manuscripts in progress, some of which were created during an April residency at the Hermitage and reflect her time there.Seidlinger will read from a novel-in- progress based on a road trip he took during the summer of 2017. Audience members are invited to bring their own beach chairs and blankets. In case of rain, the event will be moved indoors to the Palm House. The Hermitage Artist Retreat is located at 6630 Manasota Key Road in Englewood. Pirate Poker Run ...  

The Englewood Pirate Poker Run is on Saturday, Aug. 24. All profits from this event will be going to support Englewood Beach WaterFest, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on the protection of our water and marine life and encouraging the recreational use of our water resources. This year’s date for WaterFest will be Saturday, Nov. 23 and Sunday, Nov. 24.The Poker Run will kick off the event today, Friday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. with a Captain’s party at SandBar Tiki & Grille. The Poker Run will then begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, with the last hand submitted by 4 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 poker hands, with the top poker hand winning $500. All participants are encouraged to get in on the fun and dress up in pirate costumes. There will be a “best costume” award for both males and females to be awarded at the closing party.While there is no specific order for the stops at the event, each participant must pick up his or her first poker hand at the Captain’s party on Friday night. The last stop for the Poker Run will be at The Lighthouse Grill at Stump Pass, 260 Maryland Avenue. Classic rock party band, American Made, will be playing from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Lighthouse, where all prize winners* will be announced. Sunset wine cruise ...

The Florida Restaurant & Lodging Association’s Gulf Island Coast Chapter invites you to enjoy an evening of culinary delights, fine wine and music on Wednesday, Aug. 28.Four FRLA member restaurant chefs will prepare eight special menu items that will be paired to perfection with fine wines on a sunset cruise aboard Charlotte Lady.Purchase a $20 raffle ticket for a chance to win a large wine, cheese & restaurant certificates basket. Guided walk at Cedar Point ...

The public is invited to attend a free plant identification walk at Cedar Point Environmental Park on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. with members of the Mangrove Chapter Florida Native Plant Society. Cedar Point Environmental Park is a Charlotte County facility located at 2300 Placida Road in Englewood. 11th annual downtown Venice craft show ...                                           

The 11th annual downtown Venice Craft Festival returns to Florida's west coast for a 2-day celebration of affordable art and unique crafts. The festival will be held on Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept. 1 from at 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days on Miami Ave. in downtown Venice. The festival is your chance to buy a wide variety of ceramics, jewelry, stained glass, metal works and much more. Kayak trips ...

Visit the waters of Lemon Bay via a guided kayak trip with trained naturalists. Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center (CHEC) will be conducting free kayak excursions leaving from Cedar Point Environmental Park, 2300 Placida Road, Englewood from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the following dates:

• Friday, Sept. 6 • Friday, Sept. 13

After a program on safety and kayak handling, participants will walk a short distance to Lemon Bay, where a small group of 10 participants will use 11-foot, sit-on, single-person kayaks to navigate the shallow water in search of dolphin, wading birds and other marine life. All kayaks, life vests, paddles and seats are provided.Participation is limited to ages 16 and above; under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is necessary for this free program. Wine & Swine Water Safety Awareness fundraiser ... 

 The Rotary Club of Englewood is pleased to announce its 3rd annual Wine & Swine Water Safety Awareness fundraiser, to be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Elks Lodge, located at 401 N. Indiana Avenue. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. This event is being held to promote water safety awareness. The Rotary Club of Englewood has partnered with the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation (JCMF), a foundation established when Joshua drowned at the age of 2- 1/2 in 2008, and its iconic mascot ‘Josh the Otter,’ to spread the message of “Be Safe Around Water.” Educational materials are a key component, in addition to swimming lessons, to successfully promote water safety and reduce the incidence of drowning.This “Wine & Swine Dinner” will feature dancing, an auction and lots of fun! The goal of the fundraiser is to be able to purchase “Josh the Baby Otter” books to give to every kindergarten and first-grade student in the community. Tickets are $75 per person (table of eight is $500) and includes whole hog pulled pork, beef brisket, smoked chicken, ribs and all the fixins, plus soda, water, coffee & tea. Tortuga Boca Grande ... Tortuga Mexican Street Cuisine is located inside the Pink Pony. Customers can order food via a walk-up window and enjoy their meal at the picnic tables or to go.
